• Best German Online Casinos

Online gambling has been on a growing curve ever since it became a popular practice in the early years of the 21st century. Since it began, online casinos have created new branches of services to satisfy the needs of customers from all over the world, including new games and live dealer services that give people a more in-depth feel of the casino.

However, not all these services are available in every corner of the world. Most casinos have some legal licenses that allow them to operate in certain countries, while it excludes them from accepting users from other parts of the world. As such, and in order to protect themselves, some casinos ban the use of proxies and VPN’s to access their services.

We know how difficult it is to find a trustworthy and profitable online casino, so we’ve made a list for our German readers to help them find the best places to gamble and make a ton of cash in a trust-packed environment.

All of the casinos we’ll be reviewing today are fully supported in Germany, so be sure to visit them if you’re a German gambler or if you want to start online gambling in Germany.

Why Should you Play in Online Casinos?

Many people that live in areas with nearby physical casinos still somehow prefer to play in their online counterparts. This, if you don’t know much about casinos, might seem like an illogical choice. However, playing in an online casino brings you many benefits that you’d be missing on if you visit a physical casino and play there frequently.

Some of these benefits range from very basic stuff, like receiving bonuses and promotions to being entitled to extra money payments and other amazing benefits that are only available online.

    Multiple Options

The main advantage of playing in online casinos instead of physical ones is that you get to choose exactly where and what you want to play. The nearest casino near your home might not have the games you like the most, or maybe their policies simply don’t satisfy your needs.

When playing online, you get to choose exactly what you want. For example, if you like two or three casinos of the list we’ve provided today, you’ll be able to play in all of them if you wish.

    Much Simpler Transfers

Banking has always been an issue for all casinos. Dealing with other people’s money -especially when it comes to bets- is a very delicate subject, so confirming multiple transfers and deposits can be quite a tiresome job. However, online casinos tend to struggle much less than their physical counterparts when it comes to dealing with cash.

Furthermore, registering payment methods and options is way simpler via the internet than in person, as you have access to data on your devices that is more tiresome to get in person. In fact, using the internet to register information is more straightforward than in person. It’s a win-win scenario for both you and the casino – as long as you don’t try to trick them, in which case you’ll get into legal trouble.

    Saving Money

There’s no denying that visiting a physical casino is a super fun activity. Most of the time, casinos reward their players with free drinks and food. However, you’ll find yourself spending a ton of money on a physical casino, in contrast to what you’ll be doing when you’re sitting at home or traveling while playing in an online venue.

It doesn’t matter how much money you have, it’s always a smart move to set a budget for yourself whenever you visit a casino. Say, for example, you’re willing to spend €1000 visiting a physical casino. You’ll also have to account travel expenses (gas, bus tickets, taxi fares), food, drinks, and even hotels if you want to avoid traveling at night.

You might be able to spend those extra euros sitting at home and betting them on slots. Getting food and drinks at the comfort of your own home might end up saving those additional €200 that you need to earn a huge jackpot!

    Casumo Casino

Finding a legit online casino in which you can have fun might feel like a difficult task, but Casumo makes its players smile thanks to a vibrant atmosphere that focuses on maximizing the gambling freedom of every participant. The site has been using a unique approach in the online casino industry since it was founded in 2012, making it one of the best reviewed online casinos in the world.

They have always had the German market as one of their primary targets, along with the Scandinavian nations, where it was originally founded.

Their focus on client satisfaction is clear in every single aspect of the site. The whole page is very easy to navigate thanks to slick and well-presented menus, and every option that the site gives you is understandable and easy to handle.

The number of deposit and withdrawal options that they offer isn’t as large as it is in other casinos, but they are far more efficient in handling your money than their competitors. You can expect your transfers to be completed relatively soon, which is a huge plus when dealing with anxious players.

    Everything About Casumo Casino

Online casinos like to offer a bunch of options to their users when it comes to their game selections, but not every casino is successful in doing that. Some of the best online casinos in Germany offer some games that are not up to the site’s general standards. However, every game that we tried on Casumo is of the highest quality in graphics as well as fluidity in gameplay.

In Casumo, you’ll be able to play in one of the best live dealer casinos in Germany thanks to their great selection of tables and the quality of their services. They offer the best live casino games that you can imagine, including different variations of poker, baccarat, and roulette.

    LeoVegas Casino

LeoVegas has become a massive name in the online casino industry in recent years. The reviews that the site has received from players all around the planet has made them a very reputable gambling site, and the number of games that the site has to offer is only matched by the biggest names in the online casino community, both in Germany and in the whole planet.

As you might’ve guessed, the site uses Las Vegas as their insignia. However, the site was actually founded by two Swedish gambling experts that put together enough money to kickstart their new gamble in the industry – and it paid off massively. The site features some of the most exciting casino games in the world as well as the best live dealer casino providers in the industry.

LeoVegas has also focused on developing top-notch mobile technology, allowing players to log in and play regardless of where they are. Many German gamblers have turned their backs on older industry giants to move to LeoVegas after their foundation in 2012, thanks to the quality of their services and how easy the site is to use.

    What to Expect from LeoVegas

The site offers you the chance to earn a bunch of free spins with their quality new player bonuses, doing a great job of captivating new players with their world-class slot games. If you’re into slots, LeoVegas is probably the best play for you to visit as a German online gambler. Most of their games are traditional and modified slots.

They work together with a ton of casino game providers in order to maximize the number of games offered to their clients. As such, LeoVegas is able to offer players up to 1000 different games – including live dealer casino games developed by Evolution Gaming!

    Play at LeoVegas Casino

    Twin Casino

Twin Casino is one of the newcomers of the online casino industry. The site was established in 2017 by a group of professional gamblers that knew a thing or two about managing online casinos, and they chose the name Twin because of how they deal with benefits on the site. They give players double bonuses as well as double amounts of prizes in most games.

As is the case with LeoVegas, Twin Casino is supplied by some of the online industry’s finest providers, including NetEnt, Play N’ Go and Yggdrasil. Their game selection doesn’t include scratch cards or keno, but you’ll find most of the popular games and their variations on the site. If you love poker, blackjack, roulette or even traditional slots, you’ll find them waiting for you at Twin Casino.

Unlike other providers on this list, Twin Casino offers users the chance to select one of many payment options, including the popular virtual platforms of Neteller and Skrill as well as popular cards and banks, including Master Card and Visa.

The site has still a lot of room to keep growing, but they’re already becoming one of the best online casinos for German players on the planet.

What to Play in Twin Casino

Considering that Twin is a new casino, the fact that they boast a total of over 300 games is already quite impressive. It might not seem as much as the crazy 700+ casinos that you see today, but it’s still more than enough considering the quality of every game.

They do have a lot of room to grow in this department in the feature, so it wouldn’t surprise us if they started releasing new games from time to time. The games that the site has to offer are very good in many aspects, but their video quality has to be pointed out exclusively. The games are very good looking, and the sound it’s also up there as one of their best features.

It’s a shame that the site is restricted to be used in a large list of countries, but thankfully German players are able to get the best out of Twin Casino!

    SlotsMagic Casino

The name of this casino is a good indication of what they offer. SlotsMagic is a massive slots casino with an enormous number of games at their disposal, and they’re known to have the best slot games on the market available for their players. The company isn’t as well-perceived by users as others are, but their services are still efficient and of the highest quality.

They’re known to be one of those generous casinos when it comes to offers. They give new and loyal users the chance to earn up to €100 for free, just by using their services. The money can be used in a large selection of games, which the site tells you all about as soon as you receive the bonuses.

The site can be accessed in far more regions than other platforms, including Germany. They were actually taken over by new owners in 2014, which made them able to incorporate far more games than what they previously had. We find it very easy to navigate through the site, and their game selection makes it even more pleasant to use than other online casinos.

    The SlotsMagic Offers

Just like most of their games, there’s plenty to be gained when using SlotsMagic as your preferred gambling service. They have a selection of over 300 slot games alone, including traditional slots as well as many variations of jackpot slots games. The most prestigious game providers are present on the site too, but they’re mainly focusing on games developed by Skill On Net.

You can also log in to SlotsMagic if you like to play live dealer casino games! They have a surprisingly large selection of tables, with card games that we haven’t come across in other sites. You can also find traditional table games on their live services, including old school Texas Hold’Em as well as blackjack, roulette, baccarat and many variations of said games.

    Royal Panda Casino

Royal Panda is a new online casino with licenses in Malta and Great Britain, and with services that expand across all continents with a great selection of games being offered. Royal Panda actually boasts one of the smallest collections of games in our list, but their games are as extraordinary as any of those you’ll find in any other top-quality online casino. Thus, Royal Panda truly represents quality over quantity.

They even have two of the most popular slots games available for you in Guns N’ Roses Slots as well as the exclusive Game of Thrones Slots game, which has been growing in popularity in recent years.

German players can rejoice in the fact that the casino offers services in English as well as German itself, so understanding everything to perfection will not be an issue when using the Royal Panda Casino.

Love Bonuses? Royal Panda Has What You Need

If you’re one of those awesome players that love a bonus or two, then Royal Panda is surely going to suit your needs. The casino offers new players the chance to get great bonuses when they first start using the service, including a cash match welcome bonus of up to €200! Most casinos don’t offer more than €100 to begin with, giving a huge advantage to Royal Panda.

    Play at Royal Panda Casino

The size of the casino is also large enough for you to be able to withdraw payments in your local currency of euros as well as in many other global currencies if you so desire. They very rarely have any issues with payouts, having a reported payout success of almost 100%.

It’s hard finding such an honest casino, so you’d be doing good not to let go of Royal Panda once you’re hooked to it.

    CasinoJoy

CasinoJoy might not be one of the most popular online casinos on the planet, but it’s definitely one of the best we’ve tried so far. They offer 1200 games at the disposal of new users, and you’ll be able to use your deposit bonus in most of them should you decide to cash out on the offers that CasinoJoy has available for you.

It is to be noted that most online games are hosted by Evolution Gaming, one of the largest and most important casino game developers on the planet. As such, quality is almost a given when playing in CasinoJoy.

CasinoJoy holds licenses in the most difficult gambling havens in the world, including the United Kingdom, Malta, and Curacao. This obviously does wonders to their reputation, as most online casinos have become sloppy recently and are barely focusing on holding two licenses tops. It’s always nice to know you can trust your gambling provider, and the guys at CasinoJoy know that perfectly.

    Selection and Bonuses at CasinoJoy

CasinoJoy offers rewards to their long-term players, thanks to their special loyalty programs, but they also offer many bonuses to people that have just recently joined the site. It’s very easy to enjoy your time at CasinoJoy thanks to the plentiful bonuses and games that you can play on the site.

They offer many jackpot slots as well as progressive jackpots which you can win at any given time, earning up to 100,000 coins depending on how much you bet on your spins. The services of CasinoJoy are also available for mobile players, so if you like to gamble on your phone, this casino is also a great option for you.

    Rizk Casino

Rizk is probably one of the fastest-growing casinos on the planet. The site was first introduced to the online gambling community in 2016, but in the short span of just three years, they have already established themselves as one of the largest gambling communities on the planet. This is not a feat to be underestimated, as fast-growing businesses are always backed by a strong core of quality.

The site has a cool superhero theme, which appeals to audiences of all ages. In fact, they even have their own mascot to help new players get started with the service. You can play anywhere in Germany, and getting started means that you’ll be entitled to new player bonuses that will boost the balance of your wallet during the first few weeks.

    Betting and Games

One of the coolest things about Rizk is the versatility with which you can bet. The site allows bets ranging from small quantities of just €2 to larger amounts which could equate profits of thousands of euros. It’s up to you to decide how much you want to bet but taking a risk in this casino means that you could be very easily rewarded for it.

They have a large selection of games (including live dealer casino options), but the site is mainly popular because of their slot games. Their wide selection of quality slots and prestigious game company titles make Rizk one of the best online casinos for German players on the planet.

    Play at Rizk Casino

It would be cool if they offered arcade games, though! We hope to see that from Rizk in the near future, as it’s honestly one of the few things that are missing from this ever-growing online casino.

    GoWild Casino

GoWild casino has taken a very peculiar approach to the way the site is designed, as well as with all the promotions that they offer on the casino. Everything seems to be shaped towards the users’ enjoyment – there are no hidden conditions or hard-to-find games on the site, as GoWild clearly think they should make things easy for their customers.

As such, the casino has a large selection of games but they’re all presented in a way that makes it easy for you to navigate the site. In fact, the site itself seems to be designed with mobile users in mind, as GoWild itself doesn’t have a mobile app but they know how important it is for players to access the site from their mobile devices.

    Withdrawals and Stuff to Know

The one thing that seems to play against GoWild’s favor is the fact that it takes a long time to make a withdrawal on the site, contrary to the fast speeds with which you can make a deposit. For example, asking the site for withdrawal of your current account balance might take up to 48 hours, whilst depositing cash is done much quicker, in a span of less than a day most of the time.

The good thing about GoWild is that you can always contact their customer service whenever you feel that you need them. The site offers a 24/7 multiservice support, and you can contact them via their live chat as well as send them emails, or even phone them if your request is an urgent one.

    Play at GoWild Casino

    Dunder Casino

Dunder casino was founded when the recent wave of new casinos began to obtain prominence in 2016. They have managed to make a name for themselves very quickly, in a similar fashion to the job done at Rizk casino. Part of their success comes in their ability to make deals with some of the industry’s finest game providers, including the likes of NetEnt and NextGen.

We know that it’s always difficult to trust a new casino when you’re first starting out. However, Dunder makes it easy for you to do it thanks to their promotions and bonus offers. It’s easy for you to start making money as soon as you begin as well, thanks to their quick payment services and multi-method support.

The one thing we don’t like too much about Dunder is that they lack a more extensive repertoire of promotions, a thing that other sites do boast. However, given how easy it is to make money on Dunder, that hardly becomes an issue at all.

    Dunder Support & Services

The site is not allowed to be visited in many European countries, but they do offer support for German players thanks to the less strict rules of the country. However, keep in mind that if you go visiting other European countries like Spain or France, you won’t be able to play in Dunder until you return to your home.

They have a lot of services and offers for users to take advantage of, and a selection of fan-favorite games that you can play on the site. Amongst the most popular games that you’ll find in Dunder, it’s important to point out the presence of Jurassic Park Slots, Terminator Slots, and Hell Boy.

You won’t struggle to find something to play while browsing Dunder, so those of you who are unsure of what to play might want to visit Dunder as soon as possible!

    Play at Dunder Casino

    Casino.com

Casino.com knows that quality is more important than quantity. They have focused on creating one of the best online casinos for German players thanks to their small but high-quality repertoire of games. Everything you play on the site feels incredibly smooth in all senses of the word, and your money is often well rewarded with high-paying jackpots and lines.

They have a selection of just over 200 games, but every game you play here is guaranteeing you as much quality as possible. The games are graphically appealing, and the sounds don’t make you want to pop your head out whenever you listen to them – on the contrary, they’re very pleasing and relaxing at times.

    Casino.com Services

Casino.com offers great withdrawal services in every sense of the word. Knowing that this isn’t usually the strongest option in any online casino, Casino.com knows how to please players by offering them the quickest withdrawal times on the online casino industry. It’s important to note that some transactions might take up to three days, but this shouldn’t be an issue that happens too regularly.

    The bets

    Straight up (en plein)

This is a bet on any one of the numbers from 0 to 36, including 0 and double zero. The chip should be placed directly on top of the desired number on the layout ensuring that it is not touching any of the surrounding lines. It wins only if that number is spun. Odds paid are 35/1.

    Split (cheval)

This is a bet on two adjacent numbers on the layout. The bet is placed on the centre of the line between the two numbers. It wins if either of the two numbers is spun. Odds paid are 17/1.

    Street (transversale plein)

This is a bet on three adjacent numbers across the layout. It wins if any of the three numbers is spun. Odds paid are 11/1. The bet is placed on the double line between the numbers and the dozens. Note that the position of the double line varies on left- and right-handed tables.

    Corner (carre)

This is a bet on four adjacent numbers on the layout. The chip is placed on the cross-section of the line where the four numbers meet. It wins if any of the four numbers is spun. Odds paid are 8/1.

    First four

This is also a bet on four numbers. The first four is a bet on the numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3. It can cause some confusion because of its name. Despite its name, it loses if number 4 is spun. It is placed on the corner of the layout where numbers 1 and 0 and the first dozen meet. It wins if any of the four numbers 0, 1, 2 or 3 wins. Odds of 8/1 are paid.

    First five

This bet can only be played on roulette with two zeros and is a bet on the five numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Despite its name, again, it loses if the numbers 4 or 5 are spun. It is placed on the lines where 0, double zero and 2 meet. Odds paid are 6/1. This bet is best avoided as it is the least profitable from a player’s point of view. It gives the casino a house advantage of 7.89 per cent, which is much higher than the other bets on double-zero roulette, which give a house advantage of 5.26 per cent.

Double street (sixainne or transversale simple)

A bet on six adjacent numbers across the layout. The chip is placed on the double line at the side of the layout at the cross- section of the middle line of the six numbers. Odds paid are 5/1.

    Quatro

Some betting layouts incorporate bets on a quarter of the numbers. The first quarter is the numbers 1-9 inclusive, the second is the numbers 10-18 inclusive, the third is the numbers 19-27 and the fourth is the numbers 28-36. Bets are placed in the appropriate box. Odds paid are 3/1. Bets lose if 0 is spun.

    Dozen

A bet on a group of 12 consecutive numbers. There are three dozens. Numbers 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36 inclusive. Bets are placed in the appropriate box. The bet wins if any of the 12 numbers is spun. Odds paid are 2/1. All bets on the dozens lose if 0 is spun.

    roulette-roulette-wheel-ball-turn 640 x 400

    Column

A bet on a group of 12 numbers running in a column along the table. There are three columns. Bets are placed in the box at the base of the column. The bet wins if any number in the column is spun. Odds paid are 2/1. All bets on the columns lose if 0 is spun.

    Even chances/outside bets (chance simple)

These are bets on a certain characteristic of the number spun, whether it is red, black, even, odd, high or low. Bets are placed in the box marked with that characteristic. Because there is plenty of space in these boxes it is not necessary to place chips on top of other player’s chips. The bet wins if the appropriate characteristic is spun. Odds paid are evens (1/1). Before playing these bets, check what happens if 0 is spun as some casinos have different rules. In British casinos, if 0 is spun players lose half their stake.

    Low

This is a bet on the low numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the numbers 1 to 18 inclusive is spun.

    High

This is a bet on the high numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the numbers 19 to 36 inclusive is spun.

    Red

This is a bet on the numbers coloured red on the wheel. It will win if any of the red numbers is spun.

    Black

This is a bet on the numbers coloured black on the wheel. It will win if any of the black numbers is spun.

    Even

This is a bet on the even numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the even numbers is spun.

    Odd

This is a bet on the odd numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the odd numbers is spun.

    Badly placed bets

Ensure that your bets are placed exactly on the correct bet. If a chip intended for an en plein is touching the line, it will be paid out as a cheval. Bets that are not exactly placed may be straightened up by the dealer who will call out the colour of the chip and the number(s) that it is covering. It is therefore important to pay attention to the dealer, otherwise your bets may not be placed where you intended.

    Speciality bets

There are a number of bets than can be played on French and English roulette that cover particular sections of the wheel. Often you can ask the dealer to place these bets for you by providing sufficient chips. In other casinos, you will need to place these bets yourself.

    Voisins (neighbour bet)

A bet on five numbers straight up that are adjacent to one another on the wheel. A bet on 5 and the neighbours (et les voisins) on a single-zero wheel is a bet on number 5 and the two numbers either side of it on the wheel (a straight up on the numbers 16, 24, 5, 10 and 23). In some casinos, you may ask the dealer to place these bets for you. Simply give the dealer five chips and announce your bet. The bet is called out as ‘neighbours’ of the central number. For the section around 17, you would call out ‘17 and the neighbours’. The dealer will repeat the bet and its value. For example on a €5 table, the dealer will call out ‘17 and the neighbours by €5’. Seventeen and the neighbours would be an en plein bet on each of the numbers 2, 25, 17, 34 and 6. The dealer will place the chips on the correct numbers.

English roulette will often have an oval representation of the wheel printed on the layout. It is situated in front of the dealer. This oval is used to both simplify and speed up the placing of neighbour bets. These bets are placed by the dealer at the player’s request. For example, a bet on 36 and the neighbours is a straight-up bet on each of the numbers 3, 24, 36, 13 and 1. Without the oval, a player would need to place one chip on each of the numbers 3, 24, 36, 13 and 1 to make this bet. With the oval the player calls out ‘36 and the neighbours’ and gives the dealer five chips. The dealer will repeat the bet and place the five chips on the number 36 on the oval. If, for example, number 3 wins, the dealer will place the dolly as usual on number 3 and will then point to the number 3 on the oval. Fie will call out ‘36 and the neighbours wins by one chip’. One chip will be moved from the oval and placed underneath the dolly. This winning bet will then be paid out at odds of 35/1. The rest of the chips from the oval will be cleared away as losing bets.

Bets covering sections of the wheel

There are a number of bets designed to cover sections of the single-zero roulette wheel using the minimum number of chips. The wheel shows the names of each section of the wheel (see figure 3.7).

    Tiers du cylindre

This bet covers the section of numbers between 27 and 33. It includes the numbers 27,13, 36,11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24,16 and 33. It is often referred to as tiers. This bet uses just six chips to cover this section of numbers. The bets placed are six splits (chevals) on the numbers 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36. A winning number on this section of the wheel wins 17 chips and loses five chips. The odds for this bet work out at 11/1.

    Voisins du zero

This bet covers the section of the wheel from 22 to 25. It includes the numbers 22, 8, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25. The bet is made with nine chips. The bets made are 0/2/3 (two chips) street, splits (chevals) of 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22, 32/35 and a four-number bet 25/29 (two chips). If the number 0, 2 or 3 is spun, 22 chips are won and seven chips are lost. If number 25, 26, 28 or 29 is spun, 16 chips are won and seven are lost. If any of the other numbers is spun, 17 chips are won and eight are lost.

    Les orphelins (the orphans)

This is a bet on the sections of the wheel that are not covered by the tiers and the voisins du zero. It covers two opposite sections of the wheel. The numbers covered are 9, 31, 14, 20, 1, 6, 34 and 17.
The bet is made with five chips. It consists of number 1 straight up and the splits 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34. If number 1 is spun, 35 chips are won and four chips lost. If number 17 wins, 34 chips are won and three chips are lost. If 6, 9, 14, 20, 31or 34 is spun, 17 chips are won and four chips are lost.

    Complete bet

This is a bet that allows a player to bet the maximum stake on a number. Suppose you want to bet the maximum possible amount on 0, as well as a straight up, it is possible to play all the other bets associated with 0. These are the splits 0/1, 0/2 and 0/3; the streets 0/1/2 and 0/2/3 and the first four 0/1/2/3. If the maximum bet for a straight up is €1000, the maximum stake on the other bets will be:

    • split €2000
    • street €3000
    • corner €4000.

By betting with €1000 chips, 17 chips will be needed to make the maximum possible bet:

    • 1 straight up = €1000
    • 3 splits = €6000
    • 2 streets = €6000
    • first four = €4000
    • Total stake = €17000 or 17 X €1000 chips.

The complete only takes account of the inside bets. The outside bets associated with black, even, low, the dozen and the columns are not included.
The number of chips required to place a complete varies depending on the number. This is because each number has a different number of bets associated with it depending on its position on the betting layout. For example, there are four splits around number 2 and only three associated with 0. Each number therefore needs a different number of chips for a complete to be played.
It is also possible to bet on complete dozens. The number of chips is as follows:
    1st dozen: 136 chips 2nd dozen: 140 chips 3rd dozen: 120 chips.

    Number and the chevals

This is a bet straight up and the associated splits (chevals). It is a five-chip bet. The numbers in the second column from 2 to 32 have four chevals. Numbers 34 and 36 have two chevals. All the other numbers have three chevals. Where there are fewer than four chevals, the extra chip(s) is put on as a straight-up bet. For example, 14 and the chevals comprises the following bets: straight-up number 14-1 chip; cheval 11/14 – 1 chip; cheval 13/14 – 1 chip; cheval 14/15 – 1 chip; and cheval 14/17 – 1 chip. Where there are only three chevals, the extra chip is put on the number. Number 7 and the chevals comprises the bets: straight up – 2 chips; cheval 4/7 – 1 chip; cheval 7/8 – 1 chip; cheval 7/10 – 1 chip.

    The Roulette Wheel

There are two basic types of wheel with a different arrangement of numbers. The European wheel has a single 0 and a random arrangement of the numbers. The American wheel has two zeros with the numbers arranged so that consecutive numbers are on opposite sides of the wheel. For example, number 1 is opposite number 2. French roulette wheels have longer spikes, which allow the direction of the wheel to be to be changed. In American roulette, the wheel spins in one direction only. However, some casinos have introduced the practice of alternating the direction of the wheels to make it more difficult to predict the winning number.

    Roulette Betting Layout

The betting layout is printed onto a baize-covered table. Different games use different types of layout. American roulette and English roulette use tables that are about half the size of those used for French roulette. The colour of each number is also marked on the betting layout on some American roulette layouts. The layouts are usually green but may be other colours that complement the casino’s decor.

Colour or table chips are used to play roulette. Each table will have its own set of colour chips. They can only be used on that particular table. If you look at the chips on a roulette table you will see that there is a design on them. Each table has its own unique design. If you try to place a bet from a different table, for example using a €1 colour chip on a €5 table, the croupier will notice the different design and the bet will not be accepted.

    Roulette Stakes

The stakes for each table will be clearly marked, often with a sign hanging above the table. Each table will have a minimum and a maximum stake. Each type of bet will have a different maximum. Often the outside bets (even, odd, red, black, high and low) will have a higher minimum stake. For example, the table minimum may be €1, but the outside bets may have a €10 minimum.
The value of the colour chips is the minimum stake for that table. They may have a higher value at the player’s request. For example, you may be playing on a €1 table but wish to make €5 bets. When you buy your chips you ask for ‘colour at €5’. The dealer will then mark up the colour to €5. A tag will be attached to the sign giving the value of the colour and another tag placed on top of the stacks around the wheel.

    French Roulette

French roulette is played in casinos on continental Europe. It is dealt by three dealers. Two of the dealers sit beside the wheel, the other dealer sits at the end of the table. An inspector, called the chef de table, sits at the wheel end of the table. The table is roughly the size of a billiard table. The dealers take turns to spin the ball. The game is relaxed and slow paced. The dealers use a long stick called a rake to move the chips. Due to the size of the table the players cannot reach all the numbers and rely on thedealers to place their bets. The betting layout has a different arrangement of the outside bets from American roulette. The European wheel with one 0 and a haphazard arrangement of the numbers is used.

    American roulette

American roulette is played at a fast pace with approximately one spin a minute. It is played on a table about the size of a pool table. The American wheel with two zeros is used. The wheel is located at one end of the table and is operated by a dealer who stands next to it. Bets are made with coloured chips. Each player is allocated his own colour. These colour chips can only be used on the table from which they were bought. The value of the colour chips is the table minimum. At the player’s request they can be allocated a higher value. On one side of the layout there is a double line between the outside bets and the numbers. This double line denotes where street and double-street bets should be placed.

    Left- and right-handed tables

In all casinos there are left- and right-handed tables. On some tables, the wheel is to the left of the layout; on others to the right. On left-handed tables, the dealer spins the ball with his left hand and on right-handed tables, it is spun with his right hand. Care needs to be taken when placing bets on these tables as the position of the first and third columns is different. This is not a problem when you can see the numbers but if the game is busy, you can end up putting your chip on the wrong number. If you are not sure where a particular number is ask the dealer to point it out.

    English Roulette

English roulette is played in the same manner as American roulette. It is played on a table roughly the same size as an American roulette table. The continental wheel with one 0 is used. The betting layout is similar to that used for American roulette except that there is only one 0. Some betting layouts also incorporate an oval-shaped representation of the wheel for the placing of neighbour bets. These bets are placed by the dealer at the player’s request. Occasionally betting layouts are used that have additional boxes for quatro bets.

    Rapid Roulette

This uses a traditional roulette wheel and a computerized betting layout. It is a much faster game than traditional versions of roulette. One of the advantages is that players no longer have to battle to place their bets. Each player has his own computer terminal. The terminals are arranged around a roulette wheel. To start playing, onscreen chips are bought from the dealer. To make a bet players touch on a chip and drag it to the correct betting position. A timer indicates how long a player has left to bet. The dealer spins the ball. The winning number is entered into a console and the winning bets are automatically calculated and paid by the computer. To stop playing, the cash-out button is pressed. The dealer then pays out the number of onscreen chips to the player. The traditional roulette bets can be played. In addition, there are mystery jackpots, progressives, quick picks, quinellas (predicting the first and second numbers) and trifectas (predicting three consecutive numbers).

    Betting on Roulette

Roulette offers the player a wide choice of bets. They are bets on either one number or combinations of numbers. In addition, bets can be made on the characteristic of a number, which includes its colour (red or black), whether it is an even or odd number, and whether it is a high or a low number. In some casinos, it is also possible to bet on sections of the wheel. Other bets, called ‘completes’, allow the maximum stake on all bets associated with a number.

Bets are placed by positioning chips on the layout. Bets may be placed as soon as the dealer gives the instruction ‘place your bets’. When time has run out for placing bets, the dealer will announce ‘no more bets’. Often players will continue to place bets after the announcement of ‘no more bets’ but if you do this you run the risk of your bet being refused by the dealer who may return it, announcing ‘no bet’.

Bets on the part of the layout marked with the numbers 0 to 36 are called ‘inside bets’. Bets on the characteristic of the number like low, even, red, black, odd and high are called outside bets. Bets placed on the inside bets are stacked on top of one another.
So, for example, if there is already a bet on the number 20, and you also want to place a bet on this number you simply put your chip on top of the other bet. As there is more room for bets on the dozens, columns and outside bets, it is not necessary to stack bets. Instead, they are placed individually. If there is another player’s bet in the box, you simply place your bet next to it.

It is important to be precise about the placing of bets. A bet on one number, for example, should be placed exactly in the middle of the box marked with that number. If it touches the line of box, it will be assumed that it is a bet on two numbers.

    Roulette Bet Values

Bets must be made in multiples of the minimum bet. For example, on a €1 table a bet of €2.50 is not allowed. A bet of either €2 or €3 is acceptable. On a €5 table bets must be in multiples of €5. A €6 or an €11 bet, for example, is not acceptable. On most games this is not a problem as the colour chips are of the correct value for the table. This only becomes a problem if you are playing with cash chips (the casino’s general currency). Also, if you are betting on the even chances and 0 is spun, your stake will be halved. This means on a €1 table, a 50ct chip is no longer of any use. You can bet it with another 50ct chip to make up the full bet of €1.
Bets must not exceed the maximum bet. If your bet exceeds the maximum, the excess will be returned to you by the dealer. If, for example, the maximum bet on a number is €200 and you make a bet of €300, the dealer will return €100 to you. If the dealer fails to spot the bet and it is on a winning number, you will have the excess of €100 returned to you and the bet will paid out as a winning bet with a stake of just €200.

    What is Roulette?

There are several versions of the game including French, American, English and rapid roulette. All the games have the same basic principle of predicting the winning number but the equipment used to play them varies. The aim is to determine where a ball will land after it has been spun around the wheel. A rotating wheel is used that is divided into numbered compartments. The wheel is positioned to one end of a table. The table is marked with a betting layout. Players try to predict which compartment a small ball will land in after it has been spun around the casing of the wheel by a dealer. The O players make bets on the layout that correspond to their CO prediction of the winning number. If their bets are successful they are paid winnings at set odds.

The wheel is pivoted on a central spindle and rotates. It is housed in a stationary casing. The numbers 0 to 36 are arranged in compartments around the wheel. Each number is coloured. Zero is green and the other numbers are either red or black. Some wheels incorporate one 0; others have an additional number called double zero.

The game is operated by a dealer who spins the ball around the casing. It is spun in the opposite direction to that in which the wheel is turning. As the ball loses momentum it slows down and eventually drops into one of the numbered slots. Players bet on which number the ball will land in. Bets are made by placing gaming chips on the layout that is marked with the numbers. A wide choice of different bets can be made including individual numbers and groups of up to 18 numbers. Bets made on the winning number are paid by the dealer at set odds.
To increase the randomness of the winning number, there are diamond-shaped bars set at intervals around the casing. They are arranged alternately, horizontally and vertically. If the bail hits one of the bars as it drops, it will be deflected off at a different angle. The dealer also varies the speed of the ball with different spins.

    The History of Roulette

Gambling games using spinning wheels have been played for thousands of years. Some of the earliest games using spinning wheels date back to Ancient Rome and Greece. Roman soldiers would mark sections on a chariot wheel, spin it and bet on where it would stop. In Ancient Greece, the same principle was applied to shields that were marked with sections and spun on spears. The horizontal spinning wheel that forms the basic equipment for game of roulette is thought to have been invented by French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, in the 17th century. He was experimenting with perpetual motion devices. The wheel is thought to have been a result of these experiments. Roulette wheels are mounted on a spindle and, much like flywheels, a small push on the wheel is enough to keep the wheel spinning for a considerable length of time. Games that resemble roulette emerged in England in the 18th century. In 1720 a game called roly-poly was invented. It was played with a ball that was spun round a horizontal rotating wheel. It became extremely popular and was played in taverns and gaming houses. In 1739 and 1740 gaming acts were passed banning the game. To get round the ban a simplified version of the game was invented called even odd. Alternate sections of the wheel were marked with ‘E’ and ‘O’ respectively. Players would bet on whether E or O would be spun. By 1745 the game of even odd was also banned.

    Different Types of Roulette

    Double-zero Roulette

Double-zero roulette is a version of roulette that incorporates two zeros. It first emerged during the 18th century in France. Roulette is French word meaning small wheel. It was probably based on a French street game that was played on a board with 36 numbers. The numbers were marked on lots that were placed in a bag. One of the lots would be drawn from the bag to determine the winning number. The wheel most likely replaced the lots with the betting layout being retained. By 1796 double-zero roulette wheels had been introduced to Paris. They resembled modern double-zero wheels with the numbers 1 to 36, a 0 and a double-zero. The color of the zeros differed, instead of green, 0 was coloured red and the double zero was coloured black. The rules regarding the outcome of outside bets also varied. Bets on red lost if 0 was spun and bets on black lost if double zero was spun.

Later, the zeros were changed to the colour green. The rules concerning the outcome of outside bets when 0 is spun were also amended. The betting layout also differed from the modern one. It resembled a French roulette betting layout with the outside bets on either side of the numbers. Later, the more compact modern layouts emerged with the outside bets on one side only. These double-zero wheels were taken to the United States by settlers in the 19th century. Casinos opened in New Orleans and along the Mississippi River. Gambling spread to the west as settlers moved there with wagon trains. When gold was discovered in California in 1848, gambling flourished in the prospecting camps. San Francisco, which became a huge tented city, had over 1000 gambling houses where gold was the currency. Roulette was one of the most popular games. Lack of legislation controlling the games resulted in some unscrupulous operators introducing wheels with 31 pockets, which featured the numbers 1 to 28, 0, double zero and an eagle. Payout odds for a winning number were just 26/1, giving the operators a massive 12.9 per cent house advantage compared with 5.26 per cent on a regular double-zero wheel. Nowadays double-zero wheels are used on American roulette played in the United States.

    Single-zero Roulette (French roulette)

Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc invented roulette with a single 0 in 1842. They removed the double zero from the wheel and haphazardly rearranged the numbers 1 to 36. Despite removing one of the pockets, they kept the payout odds for a winning number at 35/1. This cut the house advantage to just 2.7 per cent, which proved extremely popular with gamblers. Since gambling had been made illegal in France in 1837, they introduced the game to Bad-Homburg in Germany. It was a great success. When gaming was outlawed in Germany, Francois and his son Camille brought the game to Monte Carlo.

In 1857 Prince Charles III of Monaco decided to introduce gambling to the principality to boost its finances. Gambling had just been outlawed in Germany. This prompted Louis Blanc to bring his game of single-zero roulette to Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo had the monopoly on roulette until 1933.

    casumo-casino-roulette

    English Roulette

English roulette is a version of roulette that uses a single-zero wheel and a smaller betting layout – similar to the size of an American roulette layout. To confuse matters, English roulette is often called American roulette. You may also hear it called single-zero American roulette. It is played mostly in the UK and on continental Europe. English roulette has evolved from combining some elements of French roulette with American roulette. French roulette using the single-zero wheel was introduced to England in the 1960s. French roulette needs two or three dealers. In contrast, American roulette can be operated by just one dealer and is a much faster game than French roulette. To increase profits, casinos started replacing the French roulette tables with English roulette. The betting layout was modified so that it could be used with the single-zero wheel. English roulette also uses the French names for most of the bets. A straight up (a bet on a single number) for example is called an ‘en plein’ (pronounced ‘on plan’) and a split (a bet on two numbers) is a ‘cheval’ (pronounced ‘shevale’). English roulette has led to the decline of French roulette.

    Aussie Roulette and Rapid Roulette

In 2000 a new form of roulette was introduced called rapid roulette. It was based on Aussie roulette, which is a slot machine version of the game that was played in Australian casinos. Aussie roulette was not particularly popular with traditional roulette players because they preferred the human factor of having a dealer spin the ball. In 1999 Crown Casino Australia and Stargames started to develop a semi-automated version of roulette that would combine both elements of traditional and Aussie roulette. This hybrid was called rapid roulette. Rapid roulette uses a traditional roulette wheel and dealer to generate the winning numbers. Versions using the single-zero wheel and the double-zero wheel exist. The dealer also handles the buy-ins.

The baize betting layout was replaced with computer terminals that are arranged around the roulette table so that the players can see the ball being spun. The new game allows bets to be placed without the pushing and shoving associated with traditional roulette. It also allows for varied stakes. Rapid roulette has soared in popularity and is now played in casinos around the world.

    Why Play Roulette?

Roulette has a low house advantage compared with other games. On a single-zero wheel, the house advantage is 2.7 per cent. Blackjack, in contrast, has a house advantage of 5.6 per cent – double that on roulette as the casinos takes a bigger profit on blackjack. The high payout odds for a winning number on roulette make it possible to accumulate winnings quickly. A winning number pays odds of 35/1 whereas blackjack only pays 2/1. By rebetting the winnings on roulette it is possible to win over €1000 in just two spins of a roulette wheel.
