Terry Ramsden's Net Worth in 2024: $2 Million
Terry Ramsden is a horse racing expert, gambler, and stock trader that had a peak net worth of $150 million. Through the 80s and 90s, he became one of the United Kingdom’s richest men. He fell from grace in 1999 when he declared bankruptcy after the Japanese stock market crash and the loss of most of his fortune due to bad investments and mismanagement. Through ups and down, he has kept his iconic look, which has seen him sport a mullet for well over 30 years.

What Does Terry Ramsden Do?
Terry Ramsden is a fantastic mathematician, who is very good at understanding the statistical and mathematical side of horse racing and how betting works. Listening to Ramsden talk will give you one clear piece of information: he looks at most things as if they were a math equation.
As an expert stock broker, he had a lot of money invested in the Japanese market. NAturally, when the 1987 market crash occurred, he lost a lot of money. That, coupled with loses of around $70 million on bad horse racing investments, made his fortune plummet. He lost over $110 million and had to declare bankruptcy in 1993.
He served a two-year suspended sentence and was later found to be hiding around $350,000 in assets, which got him sentenced to 21 months in prison. This time, he served 10. He got released in 1999.
Although he was wildly successful in the 80s and 90s, it is not too clear what he does now, as he faded into irrelevancy after his release from jail.
How Did Terry Ramsden Get Rich?
Raised to a regular family in Enfield, Ramsden moved to the city during his early adulthood years. He has always been really good at math (describing himself as a 10/10, in fact), an aptitude that he took full advantage of. He worked as a banker, but got swiftly moved to being a trader shortly after.
Soon after he made a little bit of money, in 1978, he went on to make a straight bet on a horse race, which earned him £75,000. He quit the firm he was working for and started focusing on investing in the Japanese stock market and betting on sports.
In 1984, Ramsden purchased Scottish company Glen International, a company that had a turnover of £18,000. He made the company focus almost exclusively on horse betting, which saw the company grow its yearly turnover to £3.5 billion.
How Does Terry Ramsden Like to Gamble?
If there’s one word we could use to describe the way Terry Ramsden gambles, then we’d go for “smart”.
Ramsden always saw horse racing similarly to how we saw the Japenese stock market investments that saw him build up a fortune: mathematically. Every bet, to him, was an equation. He wasn’t just placing straight bets on horses to win races, he was actually buying the horses and backing them to win.
Throughout his gambling career, he purchased dozens of horses. He owned over 100 horses while his fortune was at its peak.
How Does Terry Ramsden Spend His Money?
Terry Ramsden has always been a big spender. In fact, when he first quit his job from the firm he was working on during the 70s, he decided that he would establish his own company and work for himself, as he wouldn’t be able to get rich working for others.
During the peak of his fortune and before losing most of it in the 1990s, Ramsden used to own plenty of luxury cars and real estate in many countries across the globe - including a mansion in Los Angeles and a luxury home in Barbados.
Ramsden used to own 30% of Chelsea FC, and was the full owner of the professional football club Walsall F.C.
However, as he has stated himself, he has helped plenty of people under the ropes, without making a big deal out of it. It is unclear how much money he has donated or given to others, because he never made it public.
Gambling Stats
- Biggest Win: His most famous “big win” came when he bought a £500,000 horse called Katies, on the advice of trainer Mick Ryan. The horse went on to run the Irish 1,000 Guineas and won it, netting Ramsden a profit of £2.5 million on top of his initial stake.
- Biggest Loss: Since Ramsden made various investments, it’s difficult or almost impossible to calculate his biggest loss. The collapse of the Japanese asset bubble and the crash of the country’s stock market led him to lose most of his fortune: a staggering $60+ million.
Ramsden, the Math Genius that Fell From Grace
Terry Ramsden has lived a rollercoaster of a life. Today, he is far from being broke - but he’s just as far from being as rich and successful as he once was. In fact, his fall from grace was so steep that he once failed to pay his debts in 2009 due to not having the required £130,000 monthly fee that was required.
Still, even if he isn’t as rich as he once was, and even if he failed to revive his horse racing career in 2018, it is undeniable that the knowledge he had, and has, makes him one of the most influential horse race “punters” in the history of the United Kingdom.
