Roulette is a simple game, in theory. To play and win money, you only need to know the types of bets that can be placed and how they work. In this article, we'll be taking a look at all types of roulette bets, payout percentages, and odds of each one.

Casino Wizard Tip Roulette Bet Types - Inside Bets
These are all the most common types of roulette wheel bets that you can place in most games of roulette, how to place them, and how they work. Read them to properly understand how to bet at roulette tables (not at Russian roulette - that's a whole other game!) :
Straight Up (en plein)
This is a bet on any one of the numbers from 0 to 36, including 0 and double zero. The chip should be placed directly on top of the desired number on the roulette betting table layout ensuring that it is not touching any of the surrounding lines. It wins only if that number is spun. Odds paid are 35/1.

Split (cheval)
A roulette split bet is a bet on two adjacent numbers on the layout. The bet is placed on the centre of the line between the two numbers. It wins if either of the two numbers is spun. This roulette bet payouts are paid at 17/1.
Street (transversale plein)
This is a bet on three adjacent numbers across the layout. It wins if any of the three numbers is spun. Odds paid are 11/1. The bet is placed on the double line between the numbers and the dozens. Note that the position of the double line varies on left- and right-handed tables.
Corner (carre)
This is a bet on four numbers adjacent on the layout. The chip is placed on the cross-section of the line where the four numbers meet. It wins if any of the four numbers is spun. Odds paid are 8/1.
First four
This is also a bet on four numbers. The first four is a bet on the numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3. It can cause some confusion because of its name. Despite its name, it loses if number 4 is spun. It is placed on the corner of the layout where numbers 1 and 0 and the first dozen meet.
It wins if any of the four numbers 0, 1, 2 or 3 wins. Odds of 8/1 are paid. We explain this in full detail on our list of roulette strategies - go check it out!
First five
This bet can only be played on roulette with two zeros and is a bet on the five numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Despite its name, again, it loses if the numbers 4 or 5 are spun.
It is placed on the lines where 0, double zero and 2 meet. Odds paid are 6/1.
This bet is best avoided as it is the least profitable from a player’s point of view. It gives the casino a house advantage of 7.89 per cent, which is much higher than the other bets on double-zero roulette, which give a house advantage of 5.26 per cent.
Double Street (sixainne or transversale simple)
A bet on six adjacent numbers across the layout. The chip is placed on the double line at the side of the layout at the cross- section of the middle line of the six numbers. Odds paid are 5/1.
Roulette Table Bets - Outside Bets
These are bets on a certain characteristic of the number spun, whether it is red or black, even or odd, and high or low. Bets are placed in the box marked with that characteristic.
Keep in mind that outside bets refer to all types of bets placed in the outer part of the table layout, and they include bets made with no numbers. You can place outside and inside bets in one play if you like!
Casino Wizard Tip Because there is plenty of space in these boxes it is not necessary to place chips on top of other player’s chips. The bet wins if the appropriate characteristic is spun. These roulette bet odds paid are evens (1/1).
Before playing these bets, check what happens if 0 is spun as some casinos have different rules. In British casinos, if 0 is spun players lose half their stake.
Quatro
Some betting layouts incorporate bets on a quarter of the numbers. The first quarter is the numbers 1-9 inclusive, the second is the numbers 10-18 inclusive, the third is the numbers 19-27 and the fourth is the numbers 28-36. Bets are placed in the appropriate box. Odds paid are 3/1. Bets lose if 0 is spun.
Dozen
A bet on a group of 12 consecutive numbers. There are three dozens. Numbers 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36 inclusive. Bets are placed in the appropriate box. The roulette line bet wins if any of the 12 numbers is spun. Odds paid are 2/1. All bets on the dozens lose if 0 is spun.
Column
A bet on a group of 12 numbers running in a column along the table. There are three columns. Bets are placed in the box at the base of the column. The bet wins if any number in the column is spun. Odds paid are 2/1. All bets on the columns lose if 0 is spun.
Low
This is a bet on the low numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the numbers 1 to 18 inclusive is spun. It pays evens (1/1).
High
This is a bet on the high numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the numbers 19 to 36 inclusive is spun. It pays evens (1/1).
Red
This is a bet on the numbers coloured red on the wheel. It will win if any of the red numbers is spun. It pays evens (1/1).
Black
This is a bet on the numbers coloured black on the wheel. It will win if any of the black numbers is spun. It pays evens (1/1).
Even
This is a bet on the even numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the even numbers is spun. It pays evens (1/1).
Odd
This is a bet on the odd numbers on the wheel. It will win if any of the odd numbers is spun. It pays evens (1/1).
Badly Places Bets - Roulette Bets Explained
Ensure that your bets are placed exactly on the correct bet. If a chip intended for an en plein is touching the line, it will be paid out as a cheval.
Bets that are not exactly placed may be straightened up by the dealer who will call out the colour of the chip and the number(s) that it is covering.
It is therefore important to pay attention to the dealer, otherwise your bets may not be placed where you intended.
Now that you know how to bet in roulette, it's important that you don't make mistakes when playing online roulette, as there won't be a dealer to fix them.
Speciality Bets
There are a number of bets than can be played on French and English roulette that cover particular sections of the wheel. Often you can ask the dealer to place these bets for you by providing sufficient chips. In other casinos, you will need to place these bets yourself.
Casino Wizard Tip Voisins (neighbour bet)
A bet on five numbers straight up that are adjacent to one another on the wheel. A bet on 5 and the neighbours (et les voisins) on a single-zero wheel is a bet on number 5 and the two numbers either side of it on the wheel (a straight up on the numbers 16, 24, 5, 10 and 23).
In some casinos, you may ask the dealer to place these bets for you. Simply give the dealer five chips and announce your bet. The bet is called out as ‘neighbours’ of the central number. For the section around 17, you would call out ‘17 and the neighbours’. The dealer will repeat the bet and its value.
For example on a €5 table, the dealer will call out ‘17 and the neighbours by €5’. Seventeen and the neighbours would be an en plein bet on each of the numbers 2, 25, 17, 34 and 6. The dealer will place the chips on the correct numbers.
Neighbours Oval on English Roulette
English roulette will often have an oval representation of the wheel printed on the layout. It is situated in front of the dealer. This oval is used to both simplify and speed up the placing of neighbour bets.
These bets are placed by the dealer at the player’s request. For example, a bet on 36 and the neighbours is a straight-up bet on each of the numbers 3, 24, 36, 13 and 1.
Without the oval, a player would need to place one chip on each of the numbers 3, 24, 36, 13 and 1 to make this bet.
Final Bet
These are straight bets placed in numbers that all end with the same number. For example, a "Final 5" bet would mean betting on 5, 15, 25, and 35. It's commonly placed in single-zero roulette games, such as French Roulette and European Roulette.
Bets Covering Sections of the Wheel
There are a number of bets designed to cover sections of the single-zero roulette wheel using the minimum number of chips. The wheel shows the names of each section of the wheel (see figure 3.7).
Tiers Du Cylindre
This bet covers the section of numbers between 27 and 33. It includes the numbers 27,13, 36,11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24,16 and 33. It is often referred to as tiers. This bet uses just six chips to cover this section of numbers.
The bets placed are six splits (chevals) on the numbers 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30 and 33/36. A winning number on this section of the wheel wins 17 chips and loses five chips. The odds for this bet work out at 11/1.
Voisins Du Zero
This bet covers the section of the wheel from 22 to 25. It includes the numbers 22, 8, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25. The bet is made with nine chips.
The bets made are 0/2/3 (two chips) street, splits (chevals) of 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22, 32/35 and a four-number bet 25/29 (two chips).
If the number 0, 2 or 3 is spun, 22 chips are won and seven chips are lost. If number 25, 26, 28 or 29 is spun, 16 chips are won and seven are lost. If any of the other numbers is spun, 17 chips are won and eight are lost.
Les Orphelins (the orphans)
This is a bet on the sections of the wheel that are not covered by the tiers and the voisins du zero. It covers two opposite sections of the wheel. The numbers covered are 9, 31, 14, 20, 1, 6, 34 and 17.
The bet is made with five chips. It consists of number 1 straight up and the splits 6/9, 14/17, 17/20 and 31/34.
If number 1 is spun, 35 chips are won and four chips lost. If number 17 wins, 34 chips are won and three chips are lost. If 6, 9, 14, 20, 31or 34 is spun, 17 chips are won and four chips are lost.
Complete Bet
This is a bet that allows a player to bet the maximum stake on a number. Suppose you want to bet the maximum possible amount on 0, as well as a straight up, it is possible to play all the other bets associated with 0.
These are the splits 0/1, 0/2 and 0/3; the streets 0/1/2 and 0/2/3 and the first four 0/1/2/3. If the maximum bet for a straight up is €1000, the maximum stake on the other bets will be:
- split €2000
- street €3000
- corner €4000.
By betting with €1000 chips, 17 chips will be needed to make the maximum possible bet:
- 1 straight up = €1000
- 3 splits = €6000
- 2 streets = €6000
- first four = €4000
- Total stake = €17000 or 17 X €1000 chips.
The complete only takes account of the inside bets. The outside bets associated with black, even, low, the dozen and the columns are not included. The number of chips required to place a complete varies depending on the number.
This is because each number has a different number of bets associated with it depending on its position on the betting layout.
For example, there are four splits around number 2 and only three associated with 0.
Each number therefore needs a different number of chips for a complete to be played. It is also possible to bet on complete dozens. The number of chips is as follows: 1st dozen: 136 chips 2nd dozen: 140 chips 3rd dozen: 120 chips.
Number and the Chevals
This is a bet straight up and the associated splits (chevals). It is a five-chip bet. The numbers in the second column from 2 to 32 have four chevals. Numbers 34 and 36 have two chevals. All the other numbers have three chevals.
Where there are fewer than four chevals, the extra chip(s) is put on as a straight-up bet.
For example, 14 and the chevals comprises the following bets: straight-up number 14-1 chip; cheval 11/14 - 1 chip; cheval 13/14 - 1 chip; cheval 14/15 - 1 chip; and cheval 14/17 - 1 chip.
Where there are only three chevals, the extra chip is put on the number. Number 7 and the chevals comprises the bets: straight up - 2 chips; cheval 4/7 - 1 chip; cheval 7/8 - 1 chip; cheval 7/10 - 1 chip.
Call Bets Explained
Usually accepted in high-stakes tables, call bets are roulette table bets that do not require players to place a chip. Instead, the player "calls" the type of bet that they're making, and the dealer decides whether to accept it.
This is only accepted in land-based roulette betting, as it cannot be done online.
